When do you offer appointments? Appointments are offered daily but the majority of Megan's appointments are on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Should my session be held inside my home or outside? It depends on what you would like to see in the background. For outside portraits a small backyard or common area in your neighborhood can provide amazing opportunities for portraits. For inside portraits Megan only needs 12-15 feet of space since we bring the portable studio to you, including different color backdrops and professional lighting usually a living room works just fine but Megan can suggest other places if you feel that your home is not the best option for your needs.
What if my appointment is scheduled for outside and it's raining? We can reschedule.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment? Megan confirms her appointments a few days before your scheduled appointment. If you have to cancel or reschedule please let her know at this time or within 48 hours of your appointment to avoid a cancellation charge.
How long will my portrait session take? The typical session last about an hour, including setup and breakdown of the portable studio equipment but each appointment is different. Realizing this Megan may bring one to three assistants to help your session flow smoothly depending on how many pets and/or people are going to be in the portrait. Having extra sets of hands allows Megan to get the shots she couldn't have on her own and it allows her to be more creative with her composition.
What should I wear if I am going to be in the portrait? They say, "the clothes make the person". So, the goal of wardrobe in a portrait is to flatter the subject, and influence the mood. To that end, the clothes should be relatively subdued. Colors should be muted rather than bright and loud, and solid colors are usually better than prints. Aloha prints present too much contrast and will distract the viewer from the subject(s).
Keep in mind that the clothes help to set the mood or feeling of the portrait, so its best to avoid the latest, greatest, "in" styles in favor of more timeless standards. That is, if you want your portrait to have a lasting quality and value, and not be too dated. In photographs, the fact that light colors diminish shadows produces the result that the figure appears slightly fuller. Also, very light or white clothes can tend to wash out your skin tone. The opposite is true with dark toned clothes: they intensify shadows and have a slightly slimming effect, and skin tones appear deeper.
Jewelry and Accessories Keep it simple is the best advice here. Remember, the part played by accessories and jewelry, the same as with clothing, is simply to flatter the subject, not steal attention from the subject: you. Unless an accessory or piece of jewelry is essential to the look or feel you want in the portrait, or is something you wear all the time, or has special meaning to you, leave it out. On the other hand, if something is important to you such as your great aunts locket, or your pets favorite toy, talk with your photographer about how to include it in some of your portraits.
Makeup Men will tend to skip right over this while women will zoom in before by-passing this whole topic, look in a mirror at your face. What color is your skin? How's the complexion? Circles under the eyes? Are your nose and forehead shiny? You want to look your best in your portrait, and it's perfectly OK for men to blotter the forehead, put a little powder on for portraits. Even a little lightener under the eyes or blush on the cheeks! Even Arnold, and Steven Segal wear makeup when on camera! Ladies, just do what you do normally in applying your makeup, as if preparing for an evening at a benefit gala: tastefully a little stronger than for daytime.
Hair Real basic here: Make sure your hair is clean and styled the way you want it when it is time for your session have your brush, comb, spray, gel, whatever you might need to re-do it quickly! If your hair needs to be cut before the session, have it done at least a week prior to having your portraits made. If you are having your hair styled specifically for the session, have it done just before your scheduled appointment. How do I prepare my pet for their session? Exercise If you have a high energy pet, Megan recommends exercising them at least a half-hour prior to the session. This allows your pet to be in a calm and submissive state.
Grooming Some people like to have their pet groomed before their session. Just be sure that you go to a groomer that you have used before and trust.
Treats Please do not feed your pet prior to their session as a partially hungry pet will pay more attention to treats. Megan will provide special training treats if needed but if your pet is on a special diet please provide your own treats.
Toys Megan encourages you to have your pets favorite toy with them so they feel more comfortable, secure and photogenic. Do you shoot digital or film? Megan shoots digital and loves it! Digital allows her to re-touch images if needed. Which is nice dealing with pet photography.
How long do you keep my prints? Megan will hold on to your prints for a year. On your one year review she will call you to set up another portrait session or you can purchase any more prints at this time.
Is there any extra charge for additional pets and people? No. As an added value for Megan's clients she does not charge extra for additional pets and people. The more the merrier!
What forms of payment do you accept? Megan accepts cash, check, Visa, Mastercard or Discover.
Now that my portrait session is over what do I do now? Megan will set up a separate appointment for you to view your proofs. Please have everyone present during this meeting that is interested in viewing. After you have chosen your proofs, the finished portraits will be mailed or delivered to you within a week (longer for canvas and special orders).
What is Megan's BIGGEST secret to photography pets? Calm-assertive energy. Don't get frustrated if your pet keeps moving. I am use to this and can take quality portraits even if your pet is a little fidgety.
